Back to Lace

I have decided & cast on a new lace project - it's the Alpine Knit Scarf from Victorian Lace Today. Although called a scarf, it looks like a wrap to me as the finished size is 18"x65". It's a beautiful pattern with a double rose leaf center & a diamond border. I picked this design as the border is knitted at the same time so there is no pick up of stitches later for the border (I really can't imagine myself doing this!) Anyway, Wendy had knitted one & looking at hers really give me the inspiration - go & take a look!
Here's the start of mine .....

.... not much to look at now but it took me 3 nights to figure out the pattern - silly me was reading the pattern all wrong & when I had it figured out, I decided that I should go out & buy the latest Addi Lace Circulars & so I had to frog it all again & re-start on the new Addi. I also decided to change the needle size to 3.75mm as the stitches on the 3.5mm looks a little tight! So now I think I have everything laid out correctly & ready to carry on. I will keep this lace project as my night knitting (while watching mindless programs) so this will definitely take a while to finish considering the length of it. By the way, I am using a 2ply merino from the Knittery which is specially dyed in a semi-solid blue for me.

I started the lace project on 3.5mm Knitpick circulars & they were a little too smooth for the 2ply merino. The Addi Lace circular, although metal, is slightly less smooth & so makes it easier to control the stitches. Both needles have the same sharp points. The only thing that I don't like about the Addi is the metallic smell that it leaves on my fingers & I am really sensitive to strong smells (that's why I don't wear perfume as it sometimes give me a headache). So I had to make sure I wash my hands really well to get rid of the smell (fussy me!)

On the socks front, I still have to knit the partners for both my Waving Lace (already finished the toe of the 2nd sock) & the Widdershins. But I did cast on another sock as I have been experimenting with the new pattern that Wendy came up with. I tried both of the toe methods & like Toe Method 2 which is quite similar to the Magic Cast On but much easier with dpns......

Sorry for the blurry pic - this is the side view of the toe & it's really nice & neat with this new toe method that I have used. I am knitting this Tidal Wave sock using Tofutsies with 2.25mm dpns & up to the gusset now.

I am now back in knitting heaven with my Alpine Scarf & my 3 socks ....

so, instead of Goldilocks and the 3 bears, you have 3 Goldi-socks and a care(fully knit beginning of a scarf.)

It's a stretch, I know. Must need more coffee...

Blessings!

The stole/scarf is beautiful. Glad you sorted out the needles!! The wool looks beautiful too, as does the toe of the socks. I hate the smell of swings on my hands: the metallic smell is awful, I agree!!!
Glad you are well and knitting!!!

hey, I'm from the Interweave KAL. that scarf(though I agree 18" makes more of a wrap...) is going to look so beautiful in blue! and I feel your pain, I have issues with metal too but own a lot of metal circs, lol.

Oh, this scarf is going to look so beautiful! I have this itching in my fingers lately to cast on for a "real" lace project again - and this seems to be the perfect pattern indeed! Looking forward to seeing more progress shots of this!
Gorgeous sock-toe too!

My lace projects start off just like yours! The knitting, unknitting, changing of needle sizes and even needle types. I want to make Alpine Lace, too, and Wendy was my inspiration as well. I did not notice the strong metallic smell from my lace needles and will pay closer attention. I like your new sock yarn, very pretty.

Sounds like lots of good knitting ahead. Shame about the Addi lace needles and don't worry I would have had to wash my hands too. Lantern Moon wooden circs might do the trick, as I got my sample set today and they just gleem with exceptional quality. Although I have not tested them yet I am sure they with perform very well. They have reasonably pointy tips, very smooth join and the cord doesn't kink at all just like the Addis. A very pleasant surprise. Dee from Posh Yarns is happily using them for lace knitting after being sent a pair from the wholesaler in the UK. I just love the feel of the wooden needles. Jenkins also make exceptionally pointy wooden needles for lace knitting in the USA/Canada. Anne from Knitspot recommends these needles.

I love that Alpine scarf pattern, it really is pretty. And yes, it does look like more of a stole to me too.
