Mathematics was never my favorite subject in school but since then I have found that I do need to refresh my knowledge of this subject - when I was working & more so when my girls started school - in fact my Maths skills improved tremendously when I was helping them with their homework. But unfortunately, my little brain has it's limitation & now it's beyond my ability to help the girls as their Maths work is way...... beyond my level of understanding. BUT, I do still need my Maths in KNITTING! Who will ever thought that Maths & knitting would go hand in hand.
Sorry for this rambling on about Maths but it came up last night while I was knitting away on the Alpine Lace - I have been knitting every night on this project but can only manage 5-8 rows in 1 hour! Reading the pattern requires quite a bit of concentration so 1 hour is all I can manage. I have finished 56 rows for the Lower Border, 8 rows for the transition to the center panel & 48 rows for the center panel - how many more rows & when will I finish the shawl ? I check the pattern & started working out the Maths :
37 repeats of 8-row center panel = 37 x 8 = 296 rows
3 repeats of 16-row top border = 48 rows
Total = 344 rows of 128 stitches per row
8 rows per night = 344/8 = 43 nights or 6.2 weeks
So by mid September, my shawl should be finished (if I am knitting every night) - that seems to be such a long time or should I knit faster & try to finish 16 rows every night which is 2 hours per night - I don't know if my little brain can take that.
Anyway, have a look .....

I'm knitting this too - although I haven't got as much done as you! I did the math a while back and figured at my current rate of knitting (about 4 rows/week) it would take me 6 months to finish!! I can't knit it while watching tv - so I need quiet time!
I love Maths so I am always happy when I have to work out with the numbers!!! The Alpine Lace is looking so beautiful: and you can savour every moment!!
Oh man, that does sound long! Next time, don't do the math, just keep knitting uptil it is done!

Looks FANTASTIC!! Don't rush it though, Anne. Remember knitting's supposed ot be FUN, not a chore :) Whip up another couple of pairs of your brilliant socks while you're doing the lace, maybe? That way you can do 8 rows of lace per night, but then some easier more relaxing T.V knitting too! xoxo
i've always love maths...the easy bit...not the hard complicating bits!! hahahaha. anwyay...6 weeks for a shawl...i think it's very good...coz if i were to knit that shawl...i think it'll take me ONE YEAR????

Like you, I also had quite some problems with Maths at school - but knitting taught me to think a bit more logically perhaps and thus I'm doing better with it now than ever before ;) You're doing an amazing job with your Alpine Lace and it'll be worth all the troubles you're having with it - it already looks awesome and will become a real piece of art!
